These Vicious Masks

These Vicious Masks

It is 1882 and Rose Wyndham has just been kidnapped from her home in England. Her family believes she ran away in order to nurse others, but her sister, Evelyn, doesn't believe it. She takes off to search for Rose, accompanied by Mr. Kent and, unexpectedly, Mr. Braddock. As Mr. Braddock begins to claim that both Rose and Evelyn have powers, Evelyn doesn't know who she can or can't trust. But as she realizes these stories are true, Evelyn begins to fear her sister is in more danger than she had previously thought.

THESE VICIOUS MASKS takes so many twists and turns that the reader will be unable to put the book down.

In Tarun Shanker and Kelly Zekas' debut novel THESE VICIOUS MASKS, Evelyn is faced with a life-changing experience that takes her from living up to family expectations one day to saving her sister's life the next. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot to this book. At first I didn't think it was the most original, but as the story progresses, THESE VICIOUS MASKS takes so many twists and turns that the reader will be unable to put the book down. The novel was beautifully written and, particularly for debut authors, I think the plot was amazing.

However, I was unable to connect with the characters of the book. They all seemed to be going off in different directions and none of them felt very relatable. My feeling towards Mr. Kent and Mr. Braddock kept changing throughout the chapters because they were so unpredictable, but not in a good way. Evelyn was a strong female lead, but there were many decisions she made that irritated me.

Although I really enjoyed THESE VICIOUS MASKS because of the plot, I would have enjoyed it more had I connected to the characters. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction and YA romance. The ending left me intrigued and I can't wait to continue with the trilogy.
