The Weight of a Thousand Feathers

THE WEIGHT OF A THOUSAND FEATHERS by Brian Conaghan is an amazing book. The book is about a young high schooler named Bobby. Bobby has a lot to deal with in his life at such a young age. His mother is ill, and cannot take care of herself --- for that reason Bobby not only has to take care of himself, but his younger brother also.

Bobby’s younger brother is a handful. He has difficulty listening --- and gets picked on a lot by other kids. For that reason he has to go to a different school. At least Bobby isn’t facing it all on his own --- he has a best friend named Bel. She helps him out a lot when it comes to his mom and brother. She will help Bobby babysit and care for his mother. When Bobby joins a group for young caretakers, Bel is even there to keep an eye out on his brother and mom so he can go.

"Although this book is meant for young adult readers, I would recommend this to adults as well. This book has a little bit of everything in it. Some teenage drama, some love and some really real issues."

When Bobby joins the group for young caretakers he meets a boy named Lou. After a little while Bobby and Lou start to get closer. Eventually Bobby is telling Lou about some of his problems, and Lou is doing the same. When Bobby and Lou start to get closer Bobby starts to realize he has different feelings for Lou. He doesn’t understand what to do with these feelings, and keeps them to himself. He doesn’t even tell his best friend Bel. When the group goes on a weekend getaway he has the chance to tell Lou how he feels. Will Bobby end up telling Lou how he feels, or keep it a secret?

As time goes by, Bobby’s mother only gets worse. He tried to make life better for her, and hopes things will get better. When Bobby’s mom asks him to do something for her he is stuck trying to figure out the right decision. Will he do what she asks him --- or will he decide not to?

I really enjoyed reading this book. Conaghan did a really good job portraying how some people’s lives are. The book made me realize how hard some people’s lives are, no matter how old. The main character Bobby is only in high school, and having to deal with something as hard, if not harder, than most adults are dealing with. Although this book is meant for young adult readers, I would recommend this to adults as well. This book has a little bit of everything in it. Some teenage drama, some love and some really real issues.

I really liked how the author, Brian Conaghan, wrote the book. He managed to take a real issue (the sickness of a parent) that some kids go through, and explain it. He told the story from the eyes of Bobby, the young caretaker. He made you feel how Bobby felt --- explained the pain he went through. Although the book has a lot of sad issues, it isn’t a sad book, for the most part it is sweet.
