The Reckoning: Darkest Powers, Book 3

More than anything, 15-year-old Chloe would like to lead a normal life and maybe experience her first kiss. But being able to see ghosts and summon the dead makes her anything but normal. Shuttered away for a time because of her abnormal behavior, Chloe is labeled as disturbed. The only thing disturbing about her is the way she is treated by those who are jealous and distrustful of her gifts.

Chloe is a necromancer whose supernatural powers have been genetically altered as part of the Genesis Project, conducted by an evil organization known as the Edison Group. And Chloe isn’t the only supernatural teen whose life has been changed by the Edison Group, whose scientists have tweaked the DNA of their subjects to minimize side effects and improve control over their powers.

While she is on the run and in hiding, Chloe is torn between her romantic feelings for Derek and Simon, two brothers of a sort. Derek, raised by Simon’s sorcerer father since he was a young boy, is a brooding but protective werewolf whose powers have yet to be fully realized. Simon is a sweet-natured sorcerer who Chloe likes as a friend. The fourth member of their group is Tori, a stubborn and lonely witch with amazing powers she’s not always able --- or willing --- to control.

Following a daring escape, the four supernatural teens are tucked away in a safe house deep in the woods. But after strange happenings and unusual comings and goings, they begin to realize they’re not so safe after all. Because of their ultra-enhanced powers, dark and disturbing forces are out to capture them and control them --- or destroy them for good. In the safe house Chloe experiences late-night visits from a malevolent ghost who taunts her, but he also warns her not to trust her rescuers. There is danger in their midst from evildoers who plot to betray them, and they must take action or die.

THE RECKONING is the final book in Kelley Armstrong’s Darkest Powers urban fantasy trilogy. The story is told from the fresh yet knowing perspective of 15-year-old Chloe, a vulnerable teen who is just realizing the nature of her differences and the extent of her powers. The four supernaturals --- Chloe, a necromancer; Derek, a werewolf; Simon, a sorcerer; and Tori, a witch --- are not normal by even a supernatural standard, and they struggle to live with and embrace their special and at times frightening gifts. THE RECKONING is an entertaining page-turner about friendship, loyalty and embracing one’s uniqueness, which is bound to delight young adults who savor books with a strong taste of the supernatural and a light PG dose of romantic suspense.
