The Diabolic

Review

The Diabolic

S.J. Kincaid, author of the Insignia series, crafts a thrilling new take on sci-fi space operas in THE DIABOLIC. THE DIABOLIC centers around Nemesis, a Diabolic who is forced to impersonate the daughter of a Galactic senator in the deadly Galactic court.

Nemesis is a Diabolic. Diabolics are ruthless, powerful, thoughtless killing machines that have a single task: kill in order to protect the person you’ve been created for. Nemesis was created for the sole purpose of guarding Sidonia, the daughter of a Galactic senator.

After Sidonia’s father makes the grave mistake of rebelling against the Galactic Empire, Sidonia is summoned to the Galactic court to serve as a hostage. Desperate, Nemesis is willing to do whatever it takes to save Sidonia. The only way to do so, though, is to go in her place and pretend to be her. As Nemesis is thrust into the deadly court, she has to navigate her way through the corrupt politicians and two-faced senators’ equally two-faced children. Trapped in a nest full of vipers, Nemesis has to keep who she actually is a secret or risk Sidonia’s life.

"From the well-crafted characters to the thrilling plot, Kincaid’s enthralling writing is unforgettable. Fast-paced and heart touching, THE DIABOLIC is a spectacular novel that sci-fi lovers do not want to miss."

For a standalone novel, THE DIABOLIC’s plot was very well paced and felt complete. There was never a dull moment throughout the book, and Kincaid always managed to shock me with each and every chapter. Nemesis’s journey in the Galactic court was a riveting experience to read about and always kept me on the edge of my seat. From the moment the novel began until the very last page, THE DIABOLIC was truly captivating.

While THE DIABOLIC has a lot of thrills and action in it, it also has a lot of depth to it and centers a lot around what it means to be human. Diabolics aren’t meant to have any humanity in them. The only love or caring they will ever know is their love for the one person they are bonded to. Nemesis constantly struggles with the knowledge that she isn’t supposed to be anything but a ruthless killer, but at the same time she begins to develop relationships with those around her. Watching Nemesis as she is forced to confront the fact that maybe there is more to her life than just her love for Sidonia is an emotional experience and surprisingly very relatable. Kincaid delivers a clear message that is sincerely touching.

I really appreciated Nemesis and Sidonia’s friendship throughout the novel. While their bond was created artificially, their friendship and honest caring for each other grew naturally. Not many YA novels have true friendships like Nemesis and Sidonia’s, and it was really refreshing to see two female characters have such an unbreakable loyalty to each other. Some may say that it was programmed into Nemesis to care for Sidonia, but it really shone through to me that even without their purposeful link that they still would’ve become fast friends.

From the well-crafted characters to the thrilling plot, Kincaid’s enthralling writing is unforgettable. Fast-paced and heart touching, THE DIABOLIC is a spectacular novel that sci-fi lovers do not want to miss.
