The Bone Witch

Review

The Bone Witch

THE BONE WITCH is the first installment of a new series written by Rin Chupeco, the author who brought us THE GIRL FROM THE WELL and THE SUFFERING.

Tea and her family are living a normal life in Knightscross, a small village in the kingdom of Odalia, when they hear the news of her brother, Fox, has died in battle. Tea’s life changes when she accidentally raises him from the dead, showing her powers as a bone witch. There are not many bone witches in the eight kingdoms, and when one is known, they are to be feared throughout the realm.

"When I picked up THE BONE WITCH, I was very excited to immerse myself into this newfound world of magic. This story was unlike anything I have ever read before."

Tea is soon found by an older and more experienced bone witch named Lady Mykaela. Lady Mykaela takes Tea and her undead brother to Kion, where she will be trained to become an asha. Lady Mykaela, along with other sisters of the asha, help to give Tea guidance and direction during her journey in becoming an asha. Tea is only 12-years-old when she shows signs of her power. Little does she know that training at the Willows will be harder than she ever thought possible.

Her life gets a little more complicated when she encounters crowned prince Kance, and his bodyguard Kalen. It is not smart for an asha to give her heartsglass away, but Tea finds it hard to resist the Prince’s charm. There are dark threats in the horizon and she must learn how to defeat them with her newfound powers. Can she handle it?

When I picked up THE BONE WITCH, I was very excited to immerse myself into this newfound world of magic. This story was unlike anything I have ever read before. It was different, and I loved how every chapter would alternate between two separate points of view. Each chapter was also switching between the past and the present. I really enjoyed how that by the end of the story, you know the fate of some of the characters, but you do not exactly know how they get to where they are. This makes me very excited to read the sequel.

Although this book was amazing, the story did not develop an interesting plot until the end of the story. I do understand that the first book to any series is always the one to introduce characters and build up the plot for further books, but this story went by very slowly for me. I didn’t get into this book until the last 100 pages. By the end, I was hanging off the edge of my seat. I feel more connected with the characters and I am itching for more!

I recommend this new young adult novel to anyone who loves romance novels about magic. I also see some similarities to the “Game of Thrones” television series. Anyone who likes that series will absolutely love THE BONE WITCH because both of these stories have a strong female lead who takes part in a journey to finding out who she is, while experiencing some heartbreak in the process.
