Surrendered Heart: Payton Skky, #5

Payton Skky is back for one more adventure in SURRENDERED HEART, the final installment in this series by Stephanie Perry Moore. Payton finally has made it through her tumultuous first semester of college. She looks forward to going home and relaxing in the company of her family and friends. However, an unexpected event puts these plans on hold. The sudden death of her grandfather deeply distresses Payton and causes her to reevaluate her priorities.

Upon returning to school, Payton realizes that she must finally surrender herself completely to God, just as her grandfather had. Initially, things seem to be going very well for Payton and her friends. She finds solace with her new African-American roommate, who helps to quell the antics of problem roommate Jewels. Payton also begins to throw herself into a number of extracurricular activities and finally feels she has found her place in the college world. To top things off, she gets another chance with on-again, off-again boyfriend Tad Taylor. This time she is determined not to mess things up.

However, as Payton embarks on her newly God-centered life, she finds that it isn't always easy to walk with God, especially when many around her aren't. A visit with her old high school friends makes Payton wonder if their lives are perhaps going in a different direction. Payton's ever-present ex-boyfriend Dakari also appears to be quite lost --- even more so after he is hit by a shocking family tragedy. With so much pressure coming from family, friends and academics, will Payton be able to prevail in her desire to become closer to God and share His love with others?

SURRENDERED HEART is an enjoyable read, much in keeping with the series's earlier volumes. Once again Payton proves to be a likable heroine, despite the ongoing problems in her relationships. Luckily, this installment provides resolution and development that was previously unseen, or somewhat superficial. The book's events are often extreme, causing the plot to seem a bit unrealistic at times. However, by the same token, this is a page-turner and was often difficult to put down.

Fans of Payton Skky will find SURRENDERED HEART to be a satisfying conclusion to the series. Although much of the plot has been seen in previous books, readers will witness the characters experiencing long-awaited growth in their relationships with each other and with God.
