Spare and Found Parts

SPARE AND FOUND PARTS by Sarah Maria Griffin is set in a futuristic post-apocalyptic world where survivors of an epidemic are all missing parts. We follow Penelope “Nell” Crane and her endeavor to live up to her father’s status of being the famed scientist who created the biomechanical limbs that everyone in society uses. Every teen from ages 13-20 must come up with a contribution to society and Nell seems to be lacking the inspiration for her project. That all changes when she finds a mannequin hand while scavenging the beach for washed up items, realizing that if she finds other mechanical limbs, she can build herself a companion. However, in a world that fears advanced technology, Nell finds her project harder to complete than ever. On top of that, the more Nell finds out about the inner workings of her society, the more dangerous secrets start to be revealed --- one of which includes her father.

"The writing was absolutely beautiful and I found myself really enjoying reading from Nell’s point-of-view."

This novel completely wowed me. The premise was super engaging, the characters were fun to read about and I was very interested by the society. The only problem I had was that the first 200 pages were quite slow and dragged on until the real “juicy” stuff emerged. I was just waiting until Nell finally built Io --- the robot/companion --- and once that happened it was smooth sailing from there on. Although I will say that I thought the slowness was understandable since it was composed of much world building and character backstories which I felt was needed when introduced to a new world.

Other than that, I truly have nothing bad to say about this book. The writing was absolutely beautiful and I found myself really enjoying reading from Nell’s point-of-view. She seems like a person that many readers could relate to --- which I find comforting --- and the same goes with some of the other characters in the story. Also, have I mentioned that she has a mechanical heart?! How can you not love this girl!

I’m not going to lie, but there were definitely a few plot twists here and there that left me gasping out loud. I truly did not see some of the things that occurred going down and that made my love for this book go up even more. It was such an insane roller coaster ride of emotions that I kept wanting to experience time and time again. I also found myself relating this world to somewhat of a future of ours. It pretty much shows what would happen if people let machine supremacy take over, but in the end gave me hope. Hope that you can find love and comfort in the smallest things, but also hope that if technology gets out of hand, we can rebuild a much simpler future.

I would recommend this book to people who are fans of Mary Shelley’s FRANKENSTEIN since it includes many of the same aspects of bringing something to life. Overall, SPARE AND FOUND PARTS displays love and lost, family and friendship, along with a gorgeous and diverse main character...I could not recommend this book enough.
