Something Deadly This Way Comes

Something Deadly This Way Comes

The third book in the Madison Avery series begins with a vision --- and someone who needs immediate help. Madison is trying to enjoy a normal track meet watching her human boyfriend Josh, along with her two angel friends, Nakita and Barnabas, when she faints and sees a girl crying over her brother, who died in a fire. She fights the rules of reapings and scything, and vows to save the girl's soul and body, instead of making a terrible choice like she has been told to do. But it's one thing to try and save an unwilling girl, and another to change all the light and dark angel rules and everyone who follows them. Plus, there's the matter of trying to find and reclaim her mortal body.

Madison wonders if she will ever get used to the amulet and her new powers. She knows she won't get used to being supernatural, though, and misses eating and sleeping. She finds Tammy, the girl in her vision, clear across the county. Tammy thinks purple-haired Madison and her friends are freaks and calls the police on them. Then Madison realizes other light and dark angels are coming for Tammy, and time is running out to try and make the sullen girl change her ways. If she chooses to leave her little brother and sneak out of their apartment instead of babysitting, he will be killed and her soul destroyed. If they both die in the fire, their souls will be saved. Most of the supernatural world thinks this is the way to go.

Convincing Nakita and Barnabas to save Tammy, as well as her brother and both of their bodies and souls, is a challenge, but fighting the rest of supernatural creation is even tougher. Then she's arrested. While Madison is in the police station, a guardian angel helps her, and she learns that she can change auras, which is a new power. Changing Tammy's aura helps her hide the girl from angels until Tammy and her friends can convince her to walk on the light side.

Angel and other creature fans will enjoy this book, with its personal character focus and suspense. Getting to know the rules of the angel world takes some concentration, but readers can enjoy this one without having read the previous two installments. The interspersed scenes with Madison's father, discussion of curfews, personal time with her boyfriend, and fretting about her body make the series fun and readable. If the supernatural powers are intense, there's plenty more to pull it all together. Teens should enjoy this one, in both body and soul.
