Scott Pilgrim, Volume 6: Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour

Scott Pilgrim, Volume 6: Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour

Growing up can be hard to do whether you're a kid, teenager, or an adult, which is exactly what our friend Scott Pilgrim is experiencing in this, the final book of his saga, SCOTT PILGRIM’S FINEST HOUR. Whether or not he makes it his finest hour is entirely up to him and his ability to change, grow and realize who he has become over the past five books chronicling his adventures. Can he make the leap of faith and grow into the adult that readers have seen him to be, or will his anger and inability to see things as they really are force him into becoming what he truly hates --- a person like Gideon Graves?

When last we saw our precious Scott, his beloved Ramona Flowers had left, his best friend Kim had left, and readers were left at a point in the story in which we weren't sure what was going to happen to Scott. In past volumes, the ability of Scott to power through tough situations, whether it be fighting one of Ramona's evil exes or trying to understand Ramona herself, was something that was always expected. But, at the end of Volume 5, Scott really seemed to be at the point where he might just give up.

Volume 6 starts off four months after the tragic events at the end of Volume 5. Scott and Wallace are no longer roommates; Scott now lives alone in an apartment lying on the couch under a blanket protecting a “tiny world” (in other words, he doesn't leave his house and just plays video games all day). Ramona is still missing, and Kim has moved away to live with her parents in the wilderness. It seems that everything is changing, even though Scott doesn't want it to. He just wants things to be like they used to be, but everyone else is moving on. After having a terrifying dream of being eaten alive by past girlfriends, Scott leaves his home and makes contact with three very important women in his life --- ex-girlfriend Knives, ex-girlfriend Envy, and best friend Kim.

In Scott's interactions with the three, readers begin to see a pattern start to emerge that wasn't noticeable before. Readers finally begin to see that the memories we shared with Scott over the past five books weren't always true --- they were memories that Scott created so that he could live with himself without feeling bad about things he had done. Readers have always known that Envy broke Scott's heart, but we find out here that Scott broke hers, too. Same with Knives and Kim --- Scott isn't perfect, and his ability to remember things as they actually happened has been skewed in his mind. Unfortunately, not remembering things the way they really were has made Scott repeat past mistakes over and over again. With Kim, he fights Negascott, his alter ego, which holds all those bad mistakes of his past that he wants to forget. He ends up remembering everything and decides to return to Toronto to earn Ramona back by fighting Gideon Graves.

From here begins the epic battle between Scott and Gideon Graves, who, no matter what Envy might say, is a truly bad guy. Their battle is full of action and adventure, swords and one-ups, and will satisfy fans' expectations in every way. Readers will learn some new things about Gideon, but most of all, they will see Scott become the man he's supposed to be --- loving, tough, and full of fight to the end. Bryan Lee O'Malley's drawings continue to complement his storytelling in every way. The expressions of the characters really add something charming and wonderful to the story.

It was a joy to get to know Scott and his friends and see him make the long and hard journey from kid to adult. It's a journey that everyone has to make, and Scott, through the pen of Bryan Lee O'Malley, has made it something to be celebrated and joyful.
