Rumble

When I first received Ellen Hopkins' RUMBLE, I was a bit skeptical to say the least. I had two problems. One, this was a HUGE book. I'm talking 500+ pages. Now this definitely wouldn't have been an issue, but then there was the second "problem": this 500 page book was filled with what looked to be POETRY. Don't get me wrong, I love a good poem every now and then, but 500 pages full of them looked to be more than a formidable task. Nevertheless, I was up for the challenge. And boy am I glad that I was. This was hands-down the best, most gut-wrenching novel that I have read all year, and I literally flew right through it! It turns out that those "poems" were actually just normal prose (thank God!). From now on, I will never judge a book by its cover (or page number) again.

This was hands-down the best, most gut-wrenching novel that I have read all year, and I literally flew right through it!

The story is narrated by 18-year-old Matthew Turner. He's at the end of his high school career and at the top of his class, and his life is in shambles. His parents' marriage is crumbling before his eyes and, on top of that, his little brother has recently committed suicide. Naturally, these events have left him somewhat void of faith. Actually totally void of it. He's a devout atheist and cannot understand how there can be a God who would allow such peril to befall his life. The story follows Matthew as he learns to forgive himself and others around him.

Matthew's narration is laugh-out-loud hilarious and his sarcasm is spot-on. He is an insanely relatable character, one everyone can identify with. Hopkins' writing style is refreshingly simple, yet still absolutely beautiful. I would recommend this book to EVERYONE. Just read it. You'll love it. There's nothing more to say.
