Red Glove: The Curse Workers, Book 2

Red Glove: The Curse Workers, Book 2

Cassel Sharpe is the most powerful person he knows. Since discovering he's a transformation curse worker --- he can change anything or anyone into something else --- Cassel has grown in confidence and self-belief. He's also more miserable than ever. He recently changed the girl he loves, Lila, back from being a cat, but she's been cursed to love him. Cassel can't trust whether or not she really does love him, and it's been driving him crazy just to be around her. In addition, the Feds have caught wind of his power and want him to work for them. There's just one little problem: the mob wants him too. Cassel just can't seem to catch a break.

As if things couldn't get any worse, Cassel's older brother Philip, a physical curse worker, shows up dead. The Feds are particularly interested in Philip's murder since he was an informant and believe his death is connected to another string of murdered curse workers. They put Cassel on the case with the promise to protect him providing he gets them some answers.

At the same time, the head of the Zacharov family, the most powerful mob family in the business, pays Cassel a little visit. After witnessing some of his powerful touch, Zacharov gives little choice in the matter about whether or not Cassel should work for him. Cassel doesn't want a life a crime, but he's run into a little problem. The girl he loves and who is still cursed to love him, Lila, is Zacharov's daughter. How can he say no?

Let's also not forget the pressures Cassel is facing as a normal teenager in school. It's nearly impossible to keep up with his schoolwork and the complexities of friendship. His close friends, Sam and Daneca, want him to be involved in political demonstrations against restricting curse workers, and the last thing he needs is to become entangled with the police, or let his friends down.

All of life's stresses are starting to catch up with Cassel, and he still hasn't figured out who killed his brother or why. And he has caught himself in his own trap. After looking through the files the Feds gave him, he realizes the serial killer they are searching for is none other them himself! Now he needs to figure out how to dig himself out of that hole while piecing together the mystery of his brother. Don't forget about Lila, either. Cassel sure hasn't.

The second book in the Curse Workers series is just as clever and intriguing as the first, WHITE CAT. A big web of secrets has been spun and it's pure fun to see Cassel weave himself in and out of sticky situations, all while inching closer to the truth. Holly Black doesn't let up on the witty dialogue or clever cons that were so enjoyable in book one. The characters have grown, and the storyline effortlessly keeps up with them. Best of all, the ending is so surprising that it seems like a crime to make readers wait a whole year for the final installment of the trilogy.
