Really Professional Internet Person

Review

Really Professional Internet Person

Jenn McAllister, now better known for her channel name, jennxpenn, is a YouTube superstar with more than two million subscribers as of September 2015. Her new book, REALLY PROFESSIONAL INTERNET PERSON, chronicles her journey from an awkward, shy middle-schooler to a popular, confident, social figure. The book is chalk-full of personal opinions, anecdotes and top ten lists. McAllister offers advice, insight into where she comes from and her long history with YouTube.

I am a very avid YouTube viewer; I’m subscribed to multiple channels that I watch daily (my favorites being FunForLouis and Casey Neistat), so I had heard of jennxpenn and seen some of her work. Her videos are often light-hearted, relatable vlogs and comedy sketches. In many ways, the book is very similar to her videos. It is a collection of short sections of text, each containing a story, a list or various pictures.

The book is organized chronologically, starting with McAllister’s early life. She tells us about her childhood and family troubles and when she first found her passion for making YouTube videos. She talks about her first collaborations, her discovery of the Internet and, eventually, YouTube.

[Jenn McAllister] talks to the reader very personally and tries to connect with the audience throughout the course of the book.

She then describes the troubles and bullying she experienced in middle and high school, which was often a direct effect of her YouTube channel. She talks about how she overcame the challenges and how making videos shaped her into the person she is today. Finally, she writes about her life in the past few years and how much Youtube has played a part of it.

This is McAllister’s first book and it shows in many aspects. The story is hard to follow in many places, and ‘Top Ten’ lists interrupt the narrative every few pages. The advice she gives is extremely generic, and mostly lacks real sustenance. For many readers not already interested in YouTube or jennxpenn, the story can become tedious, and often spends a few pages describing a small, insignificant detail.

However, the book can be genuinely humorous on occasion, with all of the funny stories and experiences that McAllister shares. She talks to the reader very personally and tries to connect with the audience throughout the course of the book.

I would recommend REALLY PROFESSIONAL INTERNET PERSON to anyone who is already invested in jennxpenn’s channel and videos. This book is mostly meant for her fans and will appeal to anyone who likes the style of her videos. If you’re subscribed to her channel and are looking for a casual read, this book is for you.
