Random

When was the last time you thought before posting a comment on Facebook? Before I read RANDOM by Tom Leveen, it never occurred to me that my social media posts could have consequences in the real world. Now, I am much more aware of what I am posting and how it could affect the people around me.

For Tori, the main character of RANDOM, it is too late to think before she types. Tori’s online interactions with some of her fellow classmates have been linked directly to her peer Kevin’s suicide. Now, Tori is being charged with murder.

Before I read RANDOM by Tom Leveen, it never occurred to me that my social media posts could have consequences in the real world.

The night before the big trial, Tori gets a phone call from a boy. He asks her for one reason not to kill himself. Suddenly, Tori is faced with a decision. Should she risk causing another death, or should she stay out of another sticky situation? With the help of her friend, her brother, and the boy on the phone, Tori starts to appreciate her role in Kevin’s death.

I was quickly drawn into this book and I couldn’t put it down until I finished. RANDOM was full of humor, surprises and raw emotion. I was struck by the unique perspective that Tori provided as the suspect in this cyberbullying case. I have never truly understood the “other” side of a situation like this.

This book would be a wonderful choice for any high school student or adult. It takes a lot of maturity to deal with topics like the ones discussed in RANDOM.
