On the Edge

Maddie Diaz knows better than to interfere with the gangs that roam her hometown. But when she sees an innocent homeless man being attacked by the dangerous Reyes gang, she cannot just stand by and watch. But by becoming the only witness to a horrible crime, Maddie has just put herself in danger.

She doesn’t expect to receive the help of a rival gang, led by a mysterious man named Lobo. As he continues to watch over and protect her, Maddie finds her feeling of gratitude growing into something much more. But Lobo has a fight to pick with the Reyes, one that puts his life in danger. With both of them living on the edge, will their love survive?

Readers will root for Maddie as she struggles to live a normal life despite what she dared to do

ON THE EDGE is a compelling novel about a girl who finds her voice in a world where the way to stay safe is to remain quiet. Allison Van Diepen makes you fall in love with her courageous characters, realistic setting and daring romance. At the beginning of the novel, Maddie Diaz seems like a regular girl growing up in Miami. She is working hard to get to college, receiving excellent grades and is living life to the fullest. It is not until she stands up for a helpless man being attacked by the Reyes gang that we see who she really is: a courageous young woman who does what is right even at the price of her own safety. Immediately after that moment readers will root for Maddie as she struggles to live a normal life despite what she dared to do.

ON THE EDGE is very well-written. Nothing is sugar-coated or covered over; it is a very gritty world. The fact that the characters live in such a dangerous world makes the romance even sweeter. ON THE EDGE highlights the dangers of standing up for what is right, but shows that no matter what the risks, we should take a stand anyway. Readers will find many different reasons to love this novel and its characters.
