Nyxia (The Nyxia Triad)

Review

Nyxia (The Nyxia Triad)

Scott Reintgen’s futuristic debut novel, NYXIA, follows an African American teen from Detroit named Emmett Atwater. His home life is extremely rough with his mom having cancer and a father who works day and night to make ends meet, so he jumps at the opportunity to take care of his family financially when he is recruited to be a part of Genesis 11. Ten teens from around the world have been scouted and are now training in intense competitions as they skyrocket out of Earth’s atmosphere towards a newfound planet, Eden, full of the most valuable material in the universe: nyxia. The only catch is, only eight people will get a spot on the final team with all the financial benefits, so it turns into a game of every man for himself. Along the way though, Emmett and his allies find out secrets about the program’s creator --- Babel Corporations --- and there are definitely some things people aren’t telling them that could not only cost the trainees their fortunes, but their lives.

"[NYXIA] absolutely blew me away. Not only is it action-packed from the get-go, but there is so much diversity in the cast which is incredible!"

Science fiction is usually a hit or miss with me, but this one absolutely blew me away. Not only is it action-packed from the get-go, but there is so much diversity in the cast which is incredible! The recruits are from all over Earth, so we get to see many different cultural backgrounds throughout the story. The sci-fi aspects themselves are also extremely advanced and it was so cool seeing interesting inventions like a mask that translates any language someone is speaking to yours and more.

All of that is truly what I love most about science fiction because the opportunities are endless when coming up with unique ideas to throw into the story. Even though the events of the novel can be a bit far-fetched since you won’t see any of this in the daily news, it just makes everything all the more exciting! I especially loved the training scenes because they ranged from not only physical competitions, but mental ones too. Honestly, it all kind of reminded me of DIVERGENT when Tris was going through the Dauntless initiation so if you were into those scenes, you’d definitely enjoy these.

Not only was the story full of a wild plot, but the characters truly shined in this. Emmett was definitely of one my favorites because he seemed to have the most compassion and was always making sure to keep himself in check with the person he was becoming. I also loved some of the side characters including Kaya and Balil because they were always there to support their friends no matter the situation. Let’s be real, Balil also threw in some hilarious one-liners along the way too!

However, I do have to say that the storyline got a bit repetitive and slow in the middle because it was deep into the training and we were sort of seeing the same things happen over and over again. It wasn’t really that big of a deal to me though because the ending of the novel really made up for the pace in the middle. It got so fast-paced and by the time I came back into the real world, I already finished the book! The final events of the novel extremely shocked me and left me dying for the sequel!

All in all, NYXIA is a fabulous science-fiction novel that I would recommend to anyone. I definitely think it’s perfect for people trying to further immerse themselves in the genre since it’s full of interesting events that will keep a reader on their feet throughout the entirety of the read. I for one truly cannot wait for more of Reintgen’s work, I already know the sequel is going to be insanely addicting!
