Nantucket Red

Review

Nantucket Red

As teenagers, it’s sometimes hard to make decisions for ourselves. We like to change our mind every minute for fear of making the wrong decision, the wrong mistake that could possibly effect us forever. However, we not only have a hard time with our brains but also our hearts. These are exactly the problems Cricket Thompson has to face as she spends another summer in Nantucket. In NANTUCKET RED by Leila Howland, the sequel to NANTUCKET BLUE, Cricket  goes on this roller coaster ride called life to discover who she really is, what she really wants to do and who she really loves.

Cricket Thompson’s hard work finally pays off: she has been accepted to Brown this fall with a spot on the lacrosse team. She receives a scholarship, but college is still expensive. Since she can’t afford to live in a dorm, it looks like she will spend her next four years living with her mom at home. When Cricket is offered the chance to earn some cash to stay in the dorm, she jumps at it, and becomes a waitress at a fancy restaurant in Nantucket, all by herself. Her plan is simple: practice lacrosse drills in the morning and make money in the afternoon. However, this is not the plan this place has in store for her.

This is a great beach novel that should be on everyone’s summer reading list.

When she sets foot on the ferry, she meets Guitar Guy, who later turns out to be the bartender at the restaurant where she works. Spending some time with the gorgeous Ben, their friendship begins to grow, but she still can’t stop thinking about her first love, Zack. Everything on this island brings back memories of last summer --- falling in love and spending some wonderful time with Zack.

Not knowing what to do with her heart, Cricket begins to lose her brain, too. One night, when she lets alcohol take over her mind, Cricket finally breaks all the rules she has been following for so long. She realizes she may have lost her spot at Brown and ruined her future completely. Now, she has to dig deep down to fight for her dreams. Luckily, mistakes are not always a bad thing. Through this journey, Cricket realizes success is not only about reaching goals, and she discovers what she really wants to do. What will Cricket’s decision be, regarding her future? And will she follow her heart and find love again on this faraway island?

Once again, Leila Howland captures her readers’ hearts with the Nantucket Blue series. Howland makes the characters so real that readers will quickly connect with them, and want to read this book non-stop until they reach the last page (I know I did). The writing is so vivid that it makes readers feel like they are on the island themselves, witnessing everything that is going on with their own eyes. Between beaches, romance and drama, Howland grabs readers’ attention right away.

After waiting for almost a whole year since NANTUCKET BLUE, I was so excited to read NANTUCKET RED, and Leila Howland didn’t fail me at all. With the same setting and same characters but with new problems and a new plot, I pushed my homework aside and finished NANTUCKET RED in just two days. This is a great beach novel that should be on everyone’s summer reading list.
