Review

Long May She Reign

Rhiannon Thomas is a British author who has three published novels; all young adult fantasy. Her debut novel A WICKED THING, released in February 2015, is the first book in her A Wicked Thing series. The sequel, KINGDOM OF ASHES was released in February of 2016. Her most recent young adult fantasy, LONG MAY SHE REIGN was published in February of 2017 and is a standalone novel.

LONG MAY SHE REIGN is about a young woman named Freya who is a part of the royal court. She attends all of the extravagant events with the king and queen and the rest of the royal court, but hates them because she feel like she does not fit in. She has plans to run away and become a scientist. However, that all changes when almost every single court member is poisoned at the king’s birthday celebration. So many people were poisoned that Freya, previously 23rd in line for the crown, becomes queen.

The novel follows Freya as she navigates her new life as queen. She has to shed her old court-loathing self and now has to impress the court and the kingdom so that they will accept her as their queen. It also follows her friendships, ideas on how to change the kingdom, the mystery of who poisoned the royal court and a budding romance.

"LONG MAY SHE REIGN is perfect for a new spin on a friendship story that deals with other issues and has a tiny bit of romance as well. This book has so many awesome elements so it really does have something for everyone! "

I enjoyed this book very much. I liked it at first because it jumped right into the action. However, after that it seemed to drag a bit, but once it picked up again I had trouble putting it down. I loved seeing Freya's relationships with her two closest friends, Naomi and Madeleine. I also enjoyed seeing her strange relationship with Fitzroy and how it evolved throughout the novel. I actually grew very close to and felt a connection toward Freya, Naomi, Madeleine and Fitzroy. I was saddened to learn that the novel was a standalone because I will not see these characters anymore and it truly makes me feel a bit sad. The novel was character driven and I do not easily connect to characters in a novel so LONG MAY SHE REIGN is very special.

I loved seeing Freya’s character development, as well. She went from a naive young scientist to a strong and kind ruler. Although Freya became queen, she still loved science. I enjoyed all of her experiments and learning new things about science. I also really enjoyed Freya and her friends search for the murderer. I almost saw a twist coming, but I was still shocked when I read it! I am satisfied with the ending, but also unsatisfied knowing that I will not get more. I really want to know what happens next in Freya’s journey.

LONG MAY SHE REIGN is written in first person point-of-view and I really enjoyed being able to know what Freya was thinking throughout all the chaos of the book’s events. It was cool to know about all of the kingdom’s dynamics and the politics, as well. This novel is really interesting and unique. I gave it four stars, as opposed to five because it took me a while to read it because it dragged a bit in the middle. However, there was more action toward the end and I loved it! And the characters definitely made up for the parts that dragged. I love it all; the politics, friendship, romance, court, mystery, etc. Overall, I really enjoyed this novel and I just adore the characters!

This book is perfect for teens who are fans of fantasy and royalty. It does have a mystery element as well for teens who like to solve cases. Any teen who wants a well-rounded, character driven story should read this book. I recommend it for anyone who wants new characters to fall in love with. LONG MAY SHE REIGN is perfect for a new spin on a friendship story that deals with other issues and has a tiny bit of romance as well. This book has so many awesome elements so it really does have something for everyone!
