If He Had Been with Me

Review

If He Had Been with Me

Autumn believes that sad things can be beautiful, too. Autumn also believes Finny wouldn’t have died that night, if she had been there. Finny (Phineas) and Autumn were the best of friends growing up. Joined at the hip due to their mothers’ close friendship, they spent every moment together, learning and laughing as friends should. When middle school hit, their friendship doesn't manage to thrive, and eventually dissolves in high school; where Autumn is a fringy girl who likes wearing tiaras, and Finny is an all-star soccer player who is part of the in-crowd.

"Both breathtaking and heartbreaking, this novel will leave you completely stunned...you can rest assured that this will be one book in your life you will never regret."

Autumn begins dating a guy named James, with whom she immediately falls in love. She thinks surely she'll be in love with him the rest of her life. Finny feels the same but about a girl named Sylvia. But even their high school cliques can’t seem to keep away the memories in Autumn’s mind of the friendship they once had. The love between them is something that never seems to go away, but truly isn’t shown, either. Between drama with her dad and at school with her friends, Autumn begins to need support even more than she ever has had before. Will Autumn and Finny be friends again, despite the seemingly never ending silence that separates them? When tragedy strikes, who will survive, and who will fall?

Questions like this nagged me throughout the entire book. Desires tangled with reality had me second-guessing my own speculations of the fate of Autumn, Finny, Sylvie and James. Both breathtaking and heartbreaking, this novel will leave you completely stunned. If you have ever felt regret about losing someone in your life or regret towards a situation in your life, this book will easily relate to you --- perhaps in a way that will make your heart ache a little again. IF HE HAD BEEN WITH ME is a book brimming with sweet moments and heart-pounding glimpses of what it is like to be the girl next door.

If you’re stopping by the bookstore and in need of a good rainy-day novel, this book is bound to find its way into your hands. Make sure it goes home with you, and you can rest assured that this will be one book in your life you will never regret.
