For Every One

Jason Reynolds’s FOR EVERY ONE is a beautiful and highly inspirational letter to all those who have a dream that they have yet to see fulfilled.

In the course of one day, I managed to consume two Jason Reynolds’s novels: LONG WAY DOWN and FOR EVERY ONE. Both managed to captivate me with their beautiful writing style and poignant messages directed primarily at teens facing hardships. Even though both stories are incredibly short, they still pack a tremendous punch. As a reader, you walk away with a new perspective on the topics of Reynolds’s focus within his novels.

"Jason Reynolds’s FOR EVERY ONE is a beautiful and highly inspirational letter to all those who have a dream that they have yet to see fulfilled."

FOR EVERY ONE is a poetic letter that focuses on achieving dreams that seem far from attainable. Within a little over 100 pages, Reynolds makes it very clear that there is no specific method or requirements that you must adhere to in order to be successful at accomplishing goals. There is no age limit. There is no one strategy that is more beneficial than another. As long as you have a dream, you have the potential to reach the path to success just as much as anyone else.

There are the skeptics that believe that dreams are an impossible reality, whether it be because they themselves have never seen their own dream come to fruition or they are too afraid to take the steps necessary. Reynolds shuts down those disbelievers in a powerful way. Dreams are possible. Dreams are attainable. It may take years, upon years to see a dream reach the light of day, but it will happen. It will take countless amounts of struggles, but it will be worth it in the end.

Reynolds takes the time to target those specifically that feel lost on the journey to achieve their dream; those that are on the brink of giving up. In the moment, it feels as if all of us lost dreamers-- I myself was one of them --- are alone. It is when we take the time to realize that there are many of us on “the road less traveled” that the journey becomes slightly easier. We are able to find hope in those that have come before us. Hope provides ambition --- the ambition necessary to take on the impossible and make it possible.

It can be so easy to quit. It can be so easy to believe that there is no hope in sight for whatever it is that you want to conquer. Reynolds’s FOR EVERY ONE gives the reader the perfect opportunity to reflect on their own private journey and provide the incentive necessary to continue to take on whatever it is that stands in the way. This stylistic masterpiece speaks to the dreamer in us all, regardless of where we are on the path to success.
