Firefight (The Reckoners)

Review

Firefight (The Reckoners)

Brandon Sanderson has done it again! This sequel to STEELHEART was absolutely stunning. Just think of every positive adjective and that's how you can describe this book.

David and some of his old friends get transferred to Babylon Restored, Manhattan, to face their new opponent, Regalia. While this story seems to have a similar premise as the first book, a lot has changed. David starts to question whether killing Epics is right or not. He no longer wants to kill Epics, but to save them from their own destruction. He is conflicted and uncertain, all because of one Epic --- Firefight.

The characters in this book are absolutely fantastic. They are each very unique and come from different places in the novel. You connect to all of them on some level and really admire what they do. There are a lot of new characters in this book, as well as old, but the transition is easy. The new characters are realistic and they each have their own reason for becoming Reckoners, as well as their own character arc throughout the book.  It was great (and sometimes sad) to see their progression.

This sequel to STEELHEART was absolutely stunning. Just think of every positive adjective and that's how you can describe this book.

I think the antagonists in the novel make the story ten times more interesting. Some of the antagonists’ backstories stories make you sympathize with them, while others were just so evil that you love to hate them. They were cruel and rough, and sneaky and intelligent rather than just destructive.

What really made me love this novel, though, was the setting. The novel no longer takes place in Newcago, but instead it takes place in Babylon Restored, Manhattan. The setting was incredible and so different from anything I’ve ever read before. It was imaginative, colorful and reminded me of New Orleans a bit. It was also scary (especially for me, who has a huge fear of water), which works well with the story because it adds more drama and danger.

The plot in this novel is way more suspenseful than the first book. There are a lot of smaller plots happening (such as the romance), but they all play into the overarching story. Brandon Sanderson throws loops and curves and twists into this novel, and I spent the whole book trying to figure out everyone’s motives, since they were trying to keep their personal drives a secret. I unfortunately guessed the ending to the book, but I was still excited about it!

I enjoyed this book so much. It is definitely going to be one of the best books I've read in 2015. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves sci-fi, VICIOUS by V.E Schwab and Brandon Sanderson’s other books. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the series unfolds.
