Can't Look Away

Review

Can't Look Away

Donna Cooner is the author of one other YA novel, SKINNY.  In her newest novel, CAN’T LOOK AWAY, Donna tackles one of the hardest times in life: when a family member dies.

Torrey Grey is famous. Known for her beauty and fashion vlogs, she has millions of devoted watchers, all waiting for her next video.  But when death rears its ugly head, Torrey is devastated.  When Torrey and her family move, she feels as though she can redeem herself and be the popular girl that she once was. And she has classmates who seem to really understand and accept her --- even her flaws and her grief.  But should she forge her own path with Luis and Raylene? And what about all that she has learned about the Day of the Dead?

This is an amazing novel that really details what it would be like to live in the wake of something that is devastating

I think that this novel was done flawlessly. When you lose a family member, the family members that remain experience a lot of grief. It can be hard for authors to execute novels that focus on coping with grief, and Donna has done so in a way in which you can really emphasize with the characters.

And if you have ever wanted to be popular or if you are popular, you can relate to Torrey trying to move on and make friends with the popular crowd at her new school.  Torrey really tries to be who she once was. But, she eventually realizes that because of her sister’s death, she will never be the same. This is an amazing novel that really details what it would be like to live in the wake of something that is devastating, and I would recommend it to people who like realistic books with a little bit of romance.  And, although I do feel as though it was a fantastic novel, I do not feel as though this novel would be one of my “go to” novels to read on any day. Having said that, I do feel as though this novel should be put on your shelf.
