Between the Spark and the Burn

Review

Between the Spark and the Burn

It has been months since Violet has seen or heard from River, the boy who came to her town last summer and turned her world upside down. Now Violet has her parents back, along with River’s brother, Neely. But she still cannot forget about the Redding brother with the sly smile and mischievous face. So when Violet hears a radio show that is reporting on strange events happening around the island, Violet knows it must be River. Together with Neely, her brother Luke, and her friend Sunshine, she sets out to find River and bring him back.

With every clue they receive, they fall one more step behind in their mission to River. But as the clues keep piling up, they begin to suspect that they are not only going to find River, but also Brodie --- the third Redding brother who tried to kill them last summer. Faced with witch hunts and sacrifices and mysterious disappearances, Violet and Neely struggle to find River before he causes any more chaos and to stop Brodie before he kills any more people.

An intoxicating novel full of romance, mystery and a paranormal thrill

BETWEEN THE SPARK AND THE BURN is an intoxicating novel full of romance, mystery and a paranormal thrill. April Genevieve Tucholke has created a genuine character in Violet White --- the odd, quiet girl who finds herself face-to-face with the devil. The Redding brothers are intriguing as well --- River, with his sly smile and lies; Neely with his open laugh and bruises; and Brodie, with his red hair and evil smile. The characters are what make this story so memorable and readers will think about them and their stories long after finishing the novel.

April Genevieve Tucholke writes in a beautiful, lyrical way that draws the reader further into the story. Although confusing at times, BETWEEN THE SPARK AND THE BURN keeps readers guessing till the end. Overall, BETWEEN THE SPARK AND THE BURN is a daring, thrilling novel that grabs hold of the reader and does not let go.
