As She Fades: A Novel

Abbi Glines is the bestselling author of multiple series for young adults and adults. She wrote the Rosemary Beach series, the Sea Breeze series, the Vincent Boys series, the Existence Trilogy, and the Field Party series; in addition, her newest work, AS SHE FADES, is an April 2018 release.

Vale McKinley and Crawford have been best friends and dated since they were six years old. On their graduation day, Vale and Crawford are in a car accident that leaves him in a coma. Derailing all of their summer and college plans, the wake of the crash has Vale waiting for Crawford to wake up in in the hospital for weeks. When she meets Slate Allen at the hospital with his sick uncle, Vale feels something she has not ever felt with Crawford. But with him still in a coma, Vale must decide if she wants to go to college as planned and pursue another relationship with Slate.

"Glines succeeded in mixing somber elements with coming-of-age and sweet moments..."

AS SHE FADES is one of the many books by Abbi Glines that I have genuinely enjoyed reading. Vale and Slate continue in Glines’ tradition of romance with plenty of surprises and added drama. I have never read a book that went quite in the same plot direction, and that created much entertainment value. Glines succeeded in mixing somber elements with coming-of-age and sweet moments between Vale and Slate. Another intriguing aspect of Vale’s story is that it bends the typical young adult character age, beginning with high school graduation and continuing into her freshman year of college. Readers looking to expand slightly past high school in their reading may want to read AS SHE FADES as a sort of transition into that older age group.

Even if AS SHE FADES approaches many tough subjects like death, it feels almost like a light, fluffy romance novel half the time. Having short chapters and two distinct parts, this book possesses incredible readability and addictiveness. Family is truly invaluable to the lives of Slate and Vale, and that definitely came across as a strong theme. I adored Vale’s family, especially her brother Knox and his love for her, as well as Slate’s Uncle D, whose personality added much need humor and commentary to the story.

I would recommend AS SHE FADES to readers who have enjoyed Glines’ other books, as it shares much of the same style of narration. I also believe that it represents a shift in her writing toward more coming-of-age focus as opposed to being centered on only drama. Readers who are willing to read through sad moments to get to the truly happy ones will appreciate this book. AS SHE FADES is for those who are eager to read newly college-aged characters or want a refreshing setting of college instead of typical high school.
