Alex and Eliza: A Love Story

Alex and Eliza: A Love Story

The fascinating love story of Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler comes to life in ALEX & ELIZA: A Love Story. Eliza is the daughter of a wealthy colonial land owner, and Alexander is a poor orphan from the Caribbean. When Alexander must travel to Eliza’s family’s house to inform her father of some serious news, he soon meets and falls in love with the beautiful Eliza Schuyler. Unfortunately, the two do not reunite for another two years, until a chance meeting leaves Eliza falling head over heels for Alexander.

I really enjoyed how this book took the story of Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler and made it more relatable for today’s teens. The characters were incredibly relatable despite the fact that the story took place during colonial times, and it was very easy to keep reading. I also enjoyed the suspense that was added to the plot to provide more conflict. Towards the beginning of the book, there is not a whole lot of drama, but when Eliza goes to New Jersey, the plot begins to move incredibly quickly. During those parts, I found it incredibly hard to put the book down.

De la Cruz states that the book was inspired by her young daughter, and the writing style helps support that --- I feel like it is suitable for both pre-teens and teenagers. I myself am a major fan of “Hamilton,” and this book originally caught my eye due to my fascination with Alex and Eliza.

Thanks to de la Cruz providing background information without being repetitive for readers who know about Alexander and Eliza, I feel like this book can be very easily read even if someone has not listened to “Hamilton.” I am a big fan of de la Cruz’s writing, and I admire how she doesn’t stick to one genre of young adult fiction. Her books are very diverse and have something for all different kinds of readers.

This book is absolutely perfect for any teen with an interest in historical fiction. Alexander Hamilton’s story is incredibly relevant in our society now due to the popularity of the musical “Hamilton,” and I feel like that alone can help introduce many readers to this book who would not have otherwise read it. It’s also a perfect teen romance book that made me smile. If you can’t already tell from the title, it is first and foremost a book about the love story and relationship between Alexander and Eliza, and I feel like that is one of the book’s major selling points. I would even recommend it to anyone who has never heard of “Hamilton,” because this book is so good that you can read it without being aware of the historical events that it was inspired by and still greatly enjoy it. I loved reading this first book, and I eagerly await reading the sequel, LOVE & WAR: An Alex and Eliza Story.
