A Promise is Forever Christy Miller Collection: Volume Four, Book Twelve

A PROMISE IS FOREVER, the 12th and final installment in Robin Jones Gunn’s Christy Miller series, picks up some time after its predecessor and finds the protagonist leading quite a different life. Christy is now well into her freshman year of college and spending winter break on her first overseas adventure. Her decision to participate in a short-term missions trip to Europe isn’t the only big one she has made since we last saw her. She is now officially dating Doug, one of her closest friends --- and not to mention her ex-boyfriend Todd’s best friend. However, Todd is now on the other side of the world, and Christy has yet to hear anything from him. She keeps trying desperately to forget him, but even with the seemingly perfect man by her side, it’s proving to be impossible. But these thoughts are put on hold as she embarks on the trip of a lifetime with her best friends Katie, Doug and Tracy.

The gang touches down in London, and Christy immediately finds herself easily adjusting to a foreign culture and loving every new experience. One thing she is not enjoying is the constant bickering between Katie and Tracy, which is threatening the group’s much-needed team spirit as they begin their missions work. After taking in the sights of London, they head to the north of England where they will get their assignments for the trip. Christy and her friends are told that they will be going to Belfast --- not quite the European paradise she had envisioned. Her mood is further dampened as Doug is growing increasingly more distant. In fact, most of his attention seems to be focused on Tracy, his ex-girlfriend. Christy’s confusion is only added to when the program director asks her for a big favor. Instead of going to Belfast with her friends, she agrees to go to Barcelona --- alone. Though she will meet a group there, she must travel through three different countries, making innumerable train connections, with no one to help her. Christy is completely terrified, but after a harrowing journey south, she finds that the rewards for going so far out of her comfort zone may be greater than she possibly could have imagined.

A PROMISE IS FOREVER is a fun and satisfying conclusion to a great series. The book opens with many surprises and closes with even more. Fans will enjoy watching Christy realize her dream of going to Europe, and the new setting allows for a fun and readable travelogue with plenty of excitement. New characters are introduced, including Sierra Jensen, paving the way for a spin-off series. A major surprise in the book’s final pages will delight readers and give fans hope that, while this particular series has come to a close, Christy’s adventures may just be beginning.
