Enjoy Your Mid-Winter Vaca With a Book!

President's Day means that many of you have at least a long weekend this weekend (unless you are making up a snow day!). Some of you are off just one day and others of you have as much as a week's vacation. It's a great time to catch up on reading for pleasure, which you may not have time for when you are in school.

This month we bring you a book that teens have been talking about --- THE USUAL RULES by Joyce Maynard. The protagonist, Wendy, is 13 when her mom is killed on 9/11. She's living with her stepfather and half-brother when her long-lost dad shows up from California to take her to live with him. We love this book and think it would make a great book for discussion. If you ever have thought about having a book discussion with your friends, this is a read book to get started with. The title alone gives you lots to discuss. What are the usual rules --- and what happens when they go away?

Our Poll and Question this month are all about audiobooks. Do you think that listening to an audiobook "counts" as reading it? Let us know by answering the poll below. Also, let us know what book you would love to listen to.

Happy Valentine's Day to you from all of us at Teenreads.com.
We love you because we know you love books, reading and authors!

Teenreads.com Chats with Joyce Maynard, author of THE USUAL RULES

Jesse Kornbluth and Carol Fitzgerald, co-Founders of Teenreads.com interviewed Joyce Maynard, author of THE USUAL RULES. Read to learn what Maynard is hearing from teen readers about this book (they love it) and why she used 9/11 as the backdrop for her story. Thinking of having a book club discussion with your friends? See why THE USUAL RULES would be a GREAT choice to talk about (and the books that Maynard suggests pairing it with).

THE USUAL RULES by Joyce Maynard (Fiction)
Thirteen-year-old Wendy must cope with the loss of her mother, who died in the World Trade Center on that fateful day in September 2001. She moves to California to live with her father, who has been absent for years. Torn between her old life in Brooklyn and a new one three thousand miles away, Wendy is faced with a world where the usual rules no longer apply --- and life must go on without them. Reviewed by Sarah Rachel Egelman and excerpted.

We also have a reading group guide!

Tell Us What You Think: THE GARDEN by Elsie V. Aidinoff

Your opinion matters to the publishers at HarperTempest. Each month they are going to share a not-yet-published title with us that they'd like to hear YOUR thoughts about. It's your chance to read a new book and tell them what YOU think! What could be more fun than a chance to read a new book and then share your opinion? It's your chance to be a trendsetter!

This month's book is THE GARDEN by Elsie V. Aidinoff, which will be released in MAY 2004.

Books Into Movies

After doing homework, taking tests, writing papers and tackling "required reading," we think one of the best ways to unwind on the weekend is to go to the movies. It's doubly great when there is a movie based on a book! There are two films that do just that that we think you'll enjoy: The Perfect Score and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.

Cool New Books for February

In this month's roundup of cool new books, we feature young people whose determination, courage and will to survive are put to the test. You may never have experienced the problems these characters face, but you'll sympathize with them nonetheless and hope they'll eventually find happiness. Also, be sure to check out the latest Angel adventure and a do-it-yourself crafts book that shows you some terrific "do-at-home" ideas.

This Month's Reviews

A GREAT AND TERRIBLE BEAUTY by Libba Bray (Fiction/Literary Suspense)
Independent, free-thinking Gemma Doyle clashes with the morals of her Victorian society and the dangerous social structures of a girl's boarding school in this sassy, sexy blend of history, romance and magic. Reviewed by Norah Piehl and excerpted.

SARAH'S GROUND by Ann Rinaldi (Historical Fiction)
Ann Rinaldi once again brings to vivid life a slice of little-known American history in this historical novel that profiles the work of Sarah Tracy, a young woman who was hired to oversee the care of George Washington's former home, Mount Vernon, during the tumultuous times of the Civil War. Reviewed by Amy Alessio and excerpted.
