All Good Series Come to an End… We Look Fondly at Some "Last Books"

School is out, and summer vacation is in! What does this break mean to you? Besides surfing the web, catching up on television viewing, summer camp, vacations, or just plain hanging out with no schedule, this is the perfect time for pleasure reading.

For a couple of months, YOU get to decide what to read, not your teachers. Since it’s your decision, I can understand how the choices can be completely overwhelming. We’re here to help, filling you in on some of the most enticing reads of the summer. Dig in and enjoy the blissful feeling you get when you realize that there’s no reason to underline the meaningful parts or write an essay to describe what you read. Whatever book you choose, this one is all for you!

For those of you with Required Summer Reading, try this. Start out by taking a break to read some books for pleasure. From there, alternate a “required” read with a “fun one.” That way, you get some downtime of “fun reads” in between the “must reads.” Of course, as always, we have the info on books WE think you MUST read! Hmmm….is this our version of required reading?

This month, we say goodbye to some of our favorite characters, as many popular series are ending and leaving us with a bookshelf of memories. Among them are RAPTURE, which wraps up Lauren Kate’s Fallen series. In the first book, FALLEN, we were introduced to Luce and Daniel, who are now running out of time to try and stop Lucifer from erasing their past. They face an epic battle that will end with a lot of lifeless bodies, but Luce knows what she must do, for the curse only exists because she was meant for someone else. The choice she makes now is the only one that truly matters. I remember meeting Lauren when this series first kicked off, and it’s been fun watching sooooo many of you fall in love with it.

Also ending this month is The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott. In THE ENCHANTRESS, the twins of prophecy have been split and Nicholas Flamel is near death, while John Dee has the swords of power and Danu Talis has yet to fall. The future of the human race lies in the balance, and everyone is wondering how this legend will end.

Carrie Jones has written ENTICE, the final book in her Need series. The main character, Zara, finds herself at the center of a war as her town is ravaged by evil pixies, but as a pixie queen, Zara must find a way to align the humans she loves with her pixies.

And you won’t want to miss the ending of M. T. Anderson’s Norumbegan Quartet. THE CHAMBER IN THE SKY follows Brian and Gregory as they escape certain death and finally try and make sense of all their adventures. This finale brings their strange, fun and incredible journey to a close.

As these series end, we have two new ones to tell you about with new characters to get to know! In SHADOW AND BONE, a book getting A LOT of buzz and the first in debut author Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy, the great nation of Ravka is surrounded by enemies and being torn in two by an impenetrable darkness. The fate of the cities may rest upon one lonely refuge. This book is one of the prizes in our Multi-Book Giveaway, where readers have a chance to win all four books featured in Macmillan Publishing Group’s "Fierce Reads" campaign. The others are MONUMENT 14 by Emmy Laybourne, OF POSEIDON by Anna Banks and STRUCK by Jennifer Bosworth. Enter by Tuesday, August 7th at noon ET, and you could be one of five winners who will be sent all four books.

Philippa Gregory has written her first book for young adults, and it’s called CHANGELING. In this opener to the Order of Darkness, Luca and Isolde’s love grows, despite religious vows as they and their companions travel across Europe. The foursome encounter a number of interesting characters, such as werewolves and alchemists, as they head toward a historical figure that holds the boundaries of Christendom and the secrets of the Order of Darkness.

Soooo you are sitting in French class and daydreaming, and you come up with an idea for a story. Lots of you do that. So you come home and run the story by your mom. Lots of you do that. But if you are Samantha van Leer, when you tell your mom, you are sharing your idea with bestselling author Jodi Picoult. And when Sammy’s mom liked her idea, what happened next is that they wrote that story into a book together.

The result is Jodi and Sammy’s debut novel, BETWEEN THE LINES. They started the book when Sammy was just 14 and wrote it the summer after her freshman year in high school and sold it to a publisher, the same one who publishes all of Jodi’s books for adults. The summer after sophomore year, they edited it and polished off the manuscript. Now this summer, the summer after junior year, 16-year-old Sammy and her mom are headed out on a book tour that will take them to three continents to promote their book. I think that will be a “What I Did on My Summer Vacation” essay which is pretty tough to beat! And it’s also some entry for a college resume.

The book is about a lonely girl who talks to the prince in her favorite fairy tale; one day, to her shock, he talks back! Jodi and Sammy interview each other in this entertaining and insightful Author Talk. They talk about the process of writing as a mother-daughter duo, and question each other about what imaginary creature they would want as a pet. Sammy fantasizes about her imaginary purple gorilla! It’s a hilarious interview that will make you want to read the book, so don’t miss it! Oh, and we’ll have our review soon as it just came out this week! In the meantime, click here to read an excerpt from the book.
