Hi, I'm Mary! I'm a 15-year-old Christian girl who lives in Maine, in a bosky area not far from the ocean. These are a few of my favorite things... snow, sky, reading, music, school, watching old movies (anyone get that Sound of Music reference?), being persnickety about grammar and writing! Other interests include marching band and running, throwing the ball to our dog, and snuggling with cats and chasing bunnies around the yard (they are very fast rabbits!). Books are a major part of my life, and I am wicked excited to be sharing books with all of you!

Matt wears a black suit every day. No, not because his mom died --- although she did, and it sucks. But he wears the suit for his gig at the local funeral home; he needs the income since his dad can’t handle the bills (or anything, really) on his own. So while Dad’s snagging bottles of whiskey, Matt’s snagging 15 bucks an hour. Then Matt meets Lovey. She’s been through more than he can imagine, and yet, Lovey never cries. He’s drawn to her, perhaps because there’s nothing more hopeful than finding a person who understands your loneliness --- and who can maybe even help take it away.

Just about everyone is incommunicado in the small, sleepy Oregon coastal town of Sea Park during winter. Until Pearl Harbor, that is, when it springs to patriotic life. But is Ruby Opal Pearl (a.k.a. Jewels) Stokes the only person to see what’s really happening here? Tommy Kiramoto, the one person in her life who has provided security, shelter, and a smidgeon of respect—and who owns the biggest resort on the coast—is now the cause of the town’s rage. Tommy’s Japanese ancestry makes him the prime target of an angry mob, not to mention he’s also rich, has a shady past, and everyone in town owes him money. As the town's patriotism blossoms into paranoia and turns violent, Jewels has to do something to protect Tommy from internment (or worse), even if that something is going up against the town and the government, not to mention the FBI. Thus begins a twelve-year-old girl’s war within a war.
