Kody Keplinger: The Best Best Friends

Posted by Anonymous

kody-220.jpgshut-out-200.jpgAt just twenty years old, Kody Keplinger knows how to write books for teens. Her first book, THE DUFF, tackled the identity of a "designated fat, ugly friend," while her latest book, SHUT OUT, introduces a girls vs. boys showdown when the girlfriends of athletes go on a "hookup strike." In both novels, the best friends of the main characters serve crucial roles; here, Kody dishes on her favorite friend combos from other books, movies, and TV.

It wasn’t long after I started writing the first draft of my novel, SHUT OUT, that I realized just how much I loved Chloe Nelson. Chloe is best friends with Lissa, the main character, and she’s sassy, brutally honest, and totally loyal. Admittedly, I think I liked writing about Chloe even more than I liked writing about Lissa herself!

But this isn’t new for me. Looking back, I had a lot of fun writing about Casey and Jessica, the best friends in my first novel, THE DUFF, and when I consider my favorite characters in books and television, I’ve found that a lot of times I’m drawn to the awesome best friends that the main characters have. So I thought I’d make a list of the best best friends in books, TV, and movies.

5. Ron and Hermione from the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling --- This is sort of a tie. Both Ron and Hermione serve as best friends to Harry, each offering up something totally unique, but both loyal to the core. I couldn’t pick just one!

4. Samantha from HBO’s "Sex and the City" --- Samantha is smart, determined, flirty, and flawed. As much as I love Carrie Bradshaw, she’d be nothing without this edgy best friend backing her up. I adore Samantha!

3. Leah from Juno --- Like in everything else in the movie Juno, Leah is quirky. She’s good looking, has the hots for a teacher, and is the perfect match for Juno’s snark. Plus, she never gives up on her best friend, even throughout the pregnancy drama. Gotta love Leah!

2. Samwise from the Lord of the Rings series by J. R. R. Tolkien --- Forget Frodo, Sam is the real hero of the story! On the outside, he might seem like an awkward country bumpkin, but let’s be honest here; Frodo would be nowhere without Sam. He’s the best!

1.      1. Willow from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" --- Buffy was pretty awesome, but you know what made her even more awesome? Her adorable, intelligent, redheaded BFF, Willow. Willow was a whiz with a computer, but she was also sweet, funny, and charming. I want a best friend like Willow!

So that’s the list of the best best friends in movies, TV, and books. Quite a unique set since they are all so very different! But in all cases, the main character would be at a loss without them. Just like a lot of us would be lost without our own best friends in real life.
