Fourteen-year-old Joan Skraggs, just like the heroines in her beloved novels, yearns for real life and true love. But what hope is there for adventure, beauty or art on a hardscrabble farm in Pennsylvania where the work never ends? Over the summer of 1911, Joan pours her heart out into her diary as she seeks a new, better life for herself --- because maybe, just maybe, a hired girl cleaning and cooking for six dollars a week can become what a farm girl could only dream of --- a woman with a future.

The master puppeteer, Gaspare Grisini, is so expert at manipulating his puppets that they appear alive. Clara, the only child of a wealthy doctor, is spellbound by Grisini’s act and invites him to entertain at her birthday party. Grisini accepts and makes a splendidly gaudy entrance with caravan, puppets and his two orphaned assistants, Lizzie and Parsefall. Clara seems to have everything they lack --- but Clara’s life is shadowed by grief, guilt and secrets. When Clara vanishes that night, suspicion falls upon the puppeteer and Lizzie and Parsefall. As they seek to puzzle out Clara’s whereabouts, Lizzie and Parse uncover Grisini’s criminal past and wake up to his evil intentions.
